About Constables

A Tennessee Constable is an elected position with the full power of arrest and is a state peace officer under Tennessee Code Annotated.  While their powers as peace officers are valid statewide, their activities are generally conducted in the county where they are elected. We are officers of the Tennessee Judicial System as prescribed by the State Constitution. We are charged with keeping the peace and with the enforcement of the laws of the state, county, and its cities.

Constables operate at no cost to the citizens of Tipton County. Through user fees, Constables provide their own uniforms, vehicles, fuel, and equipment and stand ready to aid or assist all citizens and/or agencies within the county.  A Constable may make vehicle and pedestrian stops, write tickets, conduct criminal investigations and file criminal charges.

Training for Constables

Active Constables do the same training annually as POST-certified officers across Tennessee, as the TN-POST commission prescribes. Only municipal police officers and deputy sheriffs are POST-certified. This is meant to standardize the training across Tennessee regardless of the agency's size. Troopers, Parks Officers, Wildlife Officers, Constables, and other statewide officers are not POST-certified but often complete the same training that the POST commission prescribes for police officers and deputy sheriffs. Many officers (POST or not) do more than the minimum, which is true for many Tipton County law enforcement officers, including the active Constables in Tipton County. All of the training that Constables receive is at their own expense, including the cost of the class (if any), travel, meals, etc. Not a single dollar of public funding is used to support the training for Constables. Active Constables take their training very seriously as a function of their oath and in service to the Citizens of Tipton County.
