Crossing a Divided Highway

Writer's picture: Constable Darren SmithConstable Darren Smith

Our divided US Highway 51 extends from the Shelby county line all the way to Covington. We have dozens of crossover points on the highway. Absent any markings, signage, or lights, the proper procedure is to pull forward to the end of the gap before turning left and waiting for oncoming traffic to pass. This allows you to see that oncoming traffic and keeps you from blocking the view of a left-turning driver going the other way. If you're driving the red car, allow space for oncoming traffic turning left to pass in front of you (as depicted on the right graphic by the yellow car).

Being predictable is the key to avoiding motor vehicle crashes. Go slowly, be predictable, and give way to others if in doubt.

All motorists have a duty of care to abide by traffic laws to prevent accidents and make the roadways in Tennessee generally safer. The right-of-way rules for motorists and pedestrians refer to the legal right that one vehicle or pedestrian has to proceed when one or more other vehicles or pedestrians are at an intersection or while entering a highway. If in doubt, give way to others.
