Tennessee’s 228th birthday is Saturday, June 1. On June 1, 1796, Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 16th state and the first to be formed from federal land.
The original 1796 Tennessee Constitution called for Constables in each county. The elected office of Constable is the oldest law enforcement position in the United States, with the first one appointed in the Plymouth Colony in 1632, where Constables enforced the orders of colonial and county officials in criminal and civil matters.
