Safety Alert

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has warned against putting rhinestones or other shiny decorations on steering wheels, as they can be dangerous in a crash. These decorations are often attached to a metal or plastic plate with an adhesive backing that covers the vehicle's logo in the center of the steering wheel. In a crash, the force of the deploying airbag can cause the plate to become a projectile, which could seriously injure or kill the driver. For example, one driver lost sight in an eye after a rhinestone decal was dislodged from the steering wheel and struck them in the face during a crash.
