Civilian Ride Along Program

The Tipton Constables, in an effort to familiarize citizens with the complexities of law enforcement and develop a spirit of cooperation with its citizens, will allow citizens to ride with its officers under certain conditions.

 

Ride-Along Program Goals
  • To provide an opportunity for citizens to get to know their Constables.

  • To educate the community about what to expect and why, if they ever have a need to call for police assistance

  • To provide an opportunity for the Constables to get to know their community

 
Terms & Conditions
  • The civilian will be an observer only.

  • The civilian must remain in the vehicle during any police call or police stop.

  • The participant must have no more than minimal contact with the public.

  • A complete background check will be conducted on each applicant.

  • Each participant must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Each participant must complete and sign the department's waiver of liability/hold-harmless agreement.

  • While participating in the Ride-Along Program, you will not be allowed to have in your possession weapons of any type, which includes but is not limited to: Mace/pepper spray, batons, or clubs, stun guns, guns or ammunition. You are not allowed to possess handcuffs, flashlights, radios, scanners, video or audio recording devices of any type, or anything which may be prohibited by the officer at the time of your ride-along.

  • Dress in business-like attire. Because you will be exposed to the public, you must be neat and clean in appearance and behave appropriately. You should avoid wearing sweatshirts, t-shirts, shorts, jeans, and other types of leisure apparel.

  • Not be a user of illegal narcotics or an excessive user of alcohol

  • Be willing to follow all lawful orders and/or instructions given by the officer with whom you are assigned

  • May only participate in a ride along once in a 30-day period

  • May ride with the same officer two times within a six month period

  • Each participant must provide proof of health, medical, and life insurance coverage for any injuries they might receive while participating in the "Ride-Along" program.

  • Each participant shall be required to wear seatbelts at all times while in the police unit.

  • During emergencies, officers with citizen passengers will respond to the scene, but passenger must remain in the vehicle.  Depending on the emergency, another officer may evacuate the passenger from the vicinity of the call.

  • You will be notified by telephone or email if your participation in the Ride-Along Program is approved. You may be denied approval to participate in the Ride-Along Program for any reason.

  • All rides are scheduled for 5 hours.  The officer may terminate your ride at any time (Example: If you are unruly, fail to obey instructions or distract the officer from his/her duties). 

  • Please note, in accordance with the FBI security policy, your request will be denied for any of the following:

    • Any felony conviction, pending felony charges, and/or pending felony court proceedings.

    • Any misdemeanor conviction within the last five years.

    • If you have multiple misdemeanor convictions occurring more than five years ago.

    • If you have a current misdemeanor charge or arrest pending.
