Be Prepared for Thunder Storms and Lightning

Thunderstorms are common and can be dangerous. They can bring intense wind,
flash flooding, hail, and dangerous lightning.

Thunderstorms are dangerous storms that include lightning and powerful (50+ mph) winds. They can create lightning and hail as well as flooding and tornadoes.

 

If you are under a thunderstorm warning, find safe shelter right away:

  • When thunder roars, go indoors

  • Pay attention to alerts and warnings

  • Move from outdoors into a building or car

  • Unplug appliances

  • Do not use landline phones

When a thunderstorm threatens: 

  • Prepare Now

    • Know your area's risk of thunderstorms

    • Sign up for your community's warning system(s)

    • Identify sturdy buildings close

    • Cut down or trim trees

    • Consider buying surge protectors

    • Secure outside furniture

  • Surviving During

    • When thunder roars, go indoors

    • Pay attention to weather reports and warnings

    • If indoors, avoid running water or using landline phones

    • Protect your property by unplugging electrical devices and appliances

    • If boating or swimming get to land and find a sturdy, grounded shelter or vehicle immediately

    • If necessary, take shelter in a car with a metal top and sides

    • Avoid flooded roadways, Turn Around, Don't Drown

  • Be Safe After

    • Listen to authorities and weather forecasts for information on whether it is safe to go outside

    • Watch for fallen power lines and trees
